Andy originally joined Ruthless Blues in June 1991. Although new to the band at the time, he was by no means new to the music business having gained a wealth of experience in different styles of music over the years.
Andy's
long and diverse musical career began in Workington, Cumbria when, at the age
of eleven, he received a guitar as a Christmas present. He formed his first
band four years later with two school friends and by default found himself the
bass player. At the time "power trios" were THE thing and his musical
influences were Cream, Taste, and of course, Jimi Hendrix, although his interests
later turned more to soul where he listened to James Brown and Sly & The
Family Stone.
After leaving school, like most of the other members of Ruthless Blues, he went to Germany and toured army bases entertaining troops. On his return to England two years later, he moved to London in search of work and spent the next four years playing with a variety of soul bands and artistes like The Flirtations, The Velvellettes, and Ruby James, etc.
Andy returned to Germany in 1979 and spent the next two years backing American Blues singer Bob Lenox - "The Voice Of Brooklyn" - who toured Europe several times during this period. He also managed to fit in some work with an outfit called The Page 3 Girls!?
1981 saw Andy back in London where, together with guitarist Dave Hughes, he formed an original band called "Outbar Squeek!" (which also included Eddi Reader on vocals) who were signed by EMI and got as far as recording one album before splitting up.
Andy then drifted in to session work doing radio and TV recordings including "Spitting Image" and "Tutti Frutti", and backing artistes as diverse as Italian singer Alice, The Nolans, and Helen Terry. During the same period Andy also became involved in the London jazz scene, accompanying such artistes as Dee Dee Bridgewater (at Ronnie Scott’s) and Working Week.
In 1988 Andy formed another original band called "This Obsession" which existed for about two years playing the London club and pub circuit.
Throughout the 80’s, in addition to the above, Andy had also occasionally worked with a variety of R'n'B bands including Zoot Money and the late Steve Waller and it was through his connection with the latter that he came to meet Stevie Smith and occasionally take part in Stevie’s regular "Sunday Jam" sessions at the Half Moon, Herne Hill in London. However, unbeknown to Andy, he had actually met Stevie many years previously when Andy got roped in as the driver for Stevie’s band S.A.L.T.
Andy reluctantly decided to leave Ruthless Blues in May 1996 to concentrate on completing an Open University degree course that he was taking. Having successfully completed his degree, he subsequently played with a number of other London-based bands including John Mizzarolli and even appeared with Ruthless Blues on a few occasions when Peter Stroud was absent. Eventually, by a strange twist of fate, Andy rejoined Ruthless Blues in 1999.
Andy still maintains his other musical interests and fits in other work where and when he can. This can be fairly diverse and includes playing with Wall Street Crash; playing alongside Phil Collins on an album recorded by Ronnie Caryl, rhythm guitarist with the Phil Collins band, and, at one point, supporting American artistes "The Chippendales" at the Aldwych Theatre in London (but the less said about that the better!)
